Eligibility Check

Most clinics offer a free online screening. You'll need to confirm your condition, previous treatments tried, and that you have relevant medical records (GP letters, specialist reports).

Frequently Asked Questions — Medical Cannabis UK

Common questions from patients about accessing medical cannabis in the United Kingdom.

Is medical cannabis legal in the UK?
Yes. Since November 2018, specialist consultant physicians on the GMC Specialist Register can legally prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) in England, Scotland and Wales. The change rescheduled certain cannabis medicines from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Recreational cannabis remains illegal.
How do I get a medical cannabis prescription in the UK?
You need a referral to a GMC-registered specialist (or self-refer to a private clinic). The specialist will assess your medical history and, if appropriate, issue a private prescription. This is then dispensed by a licensed UK pharmacy. Most patients access treatment via one of the licensed private clinics — the NHS route remains extremely limited.
How much does medical cannabis cost in the UK?
Initial specialist consultations typically cost £100–£300. Monthly product costs range from around £150 for lower-dose patients to £400+ for higher doses. Flower products average around £8–10/g; oils and capsules can be cheaper per gram. Use LeafMe to compare current live prices across all UK licensed products.
What conditions qualify for a medical cannabis prescription?
UK specialists can prescribe medical cannabis for a wide range of conditions including chronic pain, multiple sclerosis spasticity, treatment-resistant epilepsy, PTSD, anxiety disorders, nausea from chemotherapy, sleep disorders and fibromyalgia. The decision rests with your specialist based on your clinical history and previous treatment attempts.
Can I drive if I take prescribed medical cannabis?
UK law sets a zero-tolerance limit of 2 µg/L THC in blood while driving. Having a valid prescription does not provide a statutory defence against a drug-driving charge. If your medication contains THC, you must not drive if impaired and should discuss driving restrictions directly with your prescribing clinician.
Is medical cannabis available on the NHS?
NHS-funded medical cannabis is extremely rare. Currently only a very small number of conditions (primarily severe treatment-resistant epilepsy in children using Epidyolex) qualify for NHS provision. The vast majority of UK patients access treatment privately through one of the licensed specialist clinics.
