Cannabis on Prescription in the UK
— Complete 2026 Patient Guide
Everything a UK patient needs to know: legal status, eligibility, how to apply, costs, and how to compare products and clinics.
Is cannabis legal on prescription in the UK?
Yes — since November 2018, cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) have been legal to prescribe in the UK under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, as amended by the Misuse of Drugs (Amendments) (Cannabis and Licence Fees) (England, Wales and Scotland) Regulations 2018.
The legal change moved certain cannabis-based medicines from Schedule 1 (no medicinal use) to Schedule 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations. Schedule 2 drugs can be prescribed, dispensed, and possessed by patients with a valid prescription. This includes both licensed cannabis medicines and unlicensed specialist imports prescribed as named-patient products.
Importantly, only Schedule 2 Cannabis-Based Medicinal Products are covered. Recreational cannabis remains a Class B drug in the UK. Over-the-counter CBD products are food supplements, not prescribed medicines. What patients receive through a clinic is a proper pharmaceutical-grade product dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.
In practice, almost all cannabis prescriptions in the UK are private. NHS prescriptions remain extremely rare, limited primarily to specialist cases of severe childhood epilepsy.

Who can get a cannabis prescription?
There is no single fixed list of qualifying conditions. Eligibility is assessed individually by a GMC-registered specialist. That said, the conditions most commonly approved include:
- Chronic pain — including neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and persistent musculoskeletal pain
- Anxiety disorders — generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder
- PTSD — post-traumatic stress disorder
- Multiple sclerosis — particularly for spasticity and pain
- Epilepsy — especially treatment-resistant forms
- Insomnia — chronic sleep disorders not responding to conventional treatment
- Nausea from chemotherapy — cancer treatment-related nausea and appetite loss
- Inflammatory bowel disease — Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
- ADHD — assessed case-by-case by certain specialist clinics
Key requirement: Most clinics require that you have already tried at least two conventional treatments for your condition without adequate relief. This demonstrates that medical cannabis is being considered as an alternative, not a first resort.
Prescriptions must be issued by a GMC-registered specialist clinician — GPs alone cannot initiate a cannabis prescription under current UK rules, although a GP may continue an existing specialist prescription in some circumstances.

How to get a cannabis prescription — step by step
Check your eligibility
Review whether your condition is one commonly treated with medical cannabis and whether you have tried two or more conventional treatments. Use our conditions guide for a full breakdown by diagnosis.
Book a clinic consultation
Choose a GMC-registered specialist clinic and book an initial consultation — most are available online within days. Compare fees, wait times, and condition expertise using our clinic finder before booking.
Attend your consultation
Bring your GP medical summary and any records of treatments you have previously tried. The specialist will review your history and decide whether medical cannabis is clinically appropriate. Consultations typically last 30–60 minutes and can be conducted via video call.
Receive your prescription
If approved, the specialist issues a Named Patient Prescription for a specific cannabis-based medicinal product. Your clinic will advise on dosing and which licensed pharmacy will dispense it.
Pharmacy dispenses your medication
Your prescription is sent to a licensed pharmacy that specialises in cannabis medicines. First dispensing can take up to 28 days as some products are imported. Once established, repeat prescriptions are typically issued every 28–90 days. See our dispensary guide for what to expect.
What types of cannabis are available on prescription?
Prescribed cannabis products in the UK cover a range of formulations. Your specialist will recommend the type most appropriate for your condition and lifestyle. All products must be either a licensed UK medicine or a specially imported named-patient product dispensed by a regulated pharmacy.
Products are sourced from licensed manufacturers in the UK and internationally. Brands include both fully licensed medicines (such as Sativex and Epidyolex for specific indications) and a growing range of specially imported CBMPs from regulated producers across Europe, Canada, and Australia.
How much does a cannabis prescription cost?
Costs vary by clinic, product type, and dosage. Below are the typical price ranges you can expect across the UK private cannabis market in 2026:
| Cost item | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial consultation | £100 – £300 | One-off fee to see a specialist |
| Monthly medication | £150 – £600 | Depends on product type and dose |
| Follow-up consultations | £50 – £150 | Required every 1–3 months |
| Dispensing fee | £0 – £15 | Some pharmacies charge separately |
| Product cost per gram | from £0.51/g | Based on live LeafMe data |
Product pricing varies significantly across pharmacies for the same prescribed medicine. Comparing prices before your prescription is dispensed can save patients hundreds of pounds per year. For a full cost breakdown and monthly budget calculator, see our prescription cost guide.
Comparing cannabis prices across UK clinics
Unlike most prescription medicines in the UK, cannabis products are dispensed privately and prices are not fixed. The same strain or formulation can differ in price by 30–50% between pharmacies. This makes price comparison genuinely valuable — not just a convenience.
LeafMe tracks live pricing across UK licensed pharmacies and dispensaries, so you can see exactly what you will pay before committing to a prescription for a specific product. We currently list 231 products from 24 clinics, with prices starting from £0.51/g.
Tip: Always check product pricing on LeafMe before your follow-up consultation. If your specialist is open to a therapeutic equivalent at a lower price point, you could significantly reduce your monthly outgoings without compromising your treatment.
