What is CBD Oil on Prescription?
Prescription CBD oil is a cannabis-based medicinal product (CBMP) containing high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) with minimal THC. Unlike the CBD supplements sold in supermarkets and health stores, prescription CBD oil is dispensed from a licensed UK pharmacy against a private prescription issued by a GMC-registered specialist doctor.
Since cannabis was rescheduled to Schedule 2 in November 2018, specialist doctors in the UK have been able to legally prescribe CBD-dominant cannabis products for a range of conditions. The NHS only funds one CBD medicine (Epidyolex, for specific childhood epilepsies) — all other prescription CBD oil is available privately.
NHS vs Private Prescription CBD Oil
NHS prescriptions for CBD oil are extremely limited. Epidyolex (pharmaceutical-grade CBD) is approved for Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. For all other conditions — anxiety, chronic pain, PTSD, sleep, inflammatory conditions — patients access CBD oil through private medical cannabis clinics. Initial consultations cost £100–£250; monthly prescription costs vary by product.
