Patient Story: How Medical Cannabis Helped Emma Manage Her Fibromyalgia
Emma, 38, from Leeds had tried over a dozen medications before medical cannabis finally gave her life back.
Emma (name changed at her request) had been living with fibromyalgia for seven years when she first considered medical cannabis. "I'd tried everything - pregabalin, amitriptyline, duloxetine. I was spending most days in bed and had given up my career," she explains.
After a recommendation from her pain specialist, Emma consulted a specialist cannabis clinic. Following an initial assessment confirming her diagnosis and treatment history, she was prescribed a combination of a medium-THC indica flower for evening use and a CBD-dominant oil for daytime management.
"Within two weeks I was sleeping properly for the first time in years," Emma says. "After six weeks, I was able to walk my dog again. It wasn't a cure, but it gave me my life back."
The financial aspect was challenging at first. Emma's monthly prescription costs approximately 380 GBP. "It's a lot, but it's less than what I was spending on private pain management appointments," she notes. She now uses a price comparison service to find the most affordable clinic for her specific products, saving around 60 GBP per month.
Emma's story is not unusual. Fibromyalgia is one of the most commonly treated conditions with medical cannabis in the UK, alongside chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, and multiple sclerosis.
