How to Store Medical Cannabis Properly: A Patient Guide
Proper storage of medical cannabis is essential for maintaining potency, quality and safety. Here's what UK patients need to know.
Proper storage is one of the most important - and most overlooked - aspects of medical cannabis treatment. Incorrectly stored products can lose potency, develop mould, or become contaminated, reducing therapeutic effectiveness and potentially posing health risks.
Temperature and Light: Cannabis flower and oils should be stored away from direct sunlight and in a cool environment. Heat accelerates cannabinoid degradation (particularly THCA to CBN) and can reduce the effectiveness of your medication. The ideal temperature is between 15-21 degrees C.
Humidity Control: For flower products, maintaining relative humidity between 59-63% is ideal. Too dry and terpenes evaporate and flower becomes harsh; too humid and there is a risk of mould. Many patients use Boveda humidity packs to maintain consistent RH levels in their storage containers.
Airtight Containers: Use glass airtight containers where possible - plastic can interact with terpenes and absorb THC over time. Keep flower in sealed amber or UV-protective glass jars.
Oil and Capsule Storage: Cannabis oils should be stored upright, away from heat and light. Refrigeration is acceptable for most oils but not necessary unless specified on the packaging. Capsules should be kept in their original packaging and stored at room temperature.
Children and Security: All medical cannabis products must be stored securely away from children and pets. Child-resistant packaging is mandatory for all licensed UK products.
Shelf Life: Most flower products have a 12-24 month shelf life from production date. Oils typically last 12-18 months. Check the expiry date on your packaging and never use expired medication.
