Cannabis Insurance Coverage: First UK Insurer Offers Medical Cannabis Benefits
AXA Health has become the first major UK health insurer to offer partial reimbursement for medical cannabis prescriptions under its premium plans.
AXA Health has become the first major UK health insurer to introduce medical cannabis reimbursement as a benefit, available to policyholders on its Enhanced Health plan from April 2026. The coverage provides up to 200 GBP per month reimbursement for MHRA-licensed cannabis products prescribed by specialist clinicians.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for the UK medical cannabis industry. Despite the NHS not routinely funding cannabis treatments, private health insurance coverage could make prescriptions accessible to a broader patient population.
AXA Health medical director Dr. Sarah Mohr commented: "We've seen compelling evidence for cannabis therapies in specific indications, and we believe it's time insurance products reflected the clinical reality for patients."
The benefit is subject to certain conditions: coverage requires a diagnosis of a qualifying condition (currently: chronic pain, MS-related symptoms, chemotherapy-related nausea, and PTSD), a prescription from a registered specialist, and use of a product on the MHRA's approved list.
Several other insurers are reported to be developing similar offerings. Analysts suggest that broad insurance coverage could reduce the average annual patient cost by 30-40%.
