First UK-Grown Medical Cannabis Products to Reach Patients This Summer

10 April 2026 2 min read

After years of relying on imports, the first commercially produced UK-grown medical cannabis products are on track to reach patients by July 2026.

The first commercially produced UK-grown medical cannabis is expected to reach licensed clinics and patients by July 2026, following the approval of cultivation and processing licences for three domestic producers. The development marks a significant milestone for the British cannabis industry. Kindred UK, based in Cambridgeshire, and Grow Pharma UK, operating from a purpose-built facility in Kent, are among the first domestic producers to receive full MHRA approval for their products. A third producer based in Scotland is expected to receive its licence by Q2 2026. Domestic production is expected to reduce import dependency - currently, over 95% of UK medical cannabis is imported from Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Canada - and could eventually lower patient costs by removing import logistics overhead. "This is a watershed moment," said Grow Pharma UK CEO Dr. Charlotte Wells. "We're not just talking about UK patients having access to UK products - we're talking about a sustainable domestic supply chain that can scale with demand." Initial domestic products will include T20/C1 and T15/C1 flower varieties. The UK Home Office and MHRA have both indicated interest in expanding domestic cultivation licences, with the goal of meeting at least 25% of national demand from domestic sources by 2028.
