Survey: 89% of UK Medical Cannabis Patients Report Improved Quality of Life
A large-scale patient survey has found that 89 per cent of UK medical cannabis users report meaningful improvements in quality of life, with pain and sleep being the most commonly reported benefits.
A comprehensive survey of UK medical cannabis patients has found that 89 per cent report meaningful improvements in their overall quality of life since starting treatment. The findings, drawn from a sample of more than two thousand registered patients across a range of conditions, represent the largest patient-reported outcomes study of its kind conducted in the UK to date.
Key Findings from the Survey
The survey collected data on treatment outcomes, satisfaction with the prescribing process, product preferences, and barriers to access. Headline findings include:
- 89% reported improved quality of life overall
- 84% reported reduced pain severity on a standardised pain scale
- 79% reported improved sleep quality and duration
- 71% reported reduced anxiety levels
- 67% reported a reduction in the use of conventional medications including opioids and benzodiazepines
- 62% reported improved ability to perform daily activities
Condition Breakdown
Patients with chronic pain conditions reported the highest overall satisfaction rates, closely followed by those with PTSD and anxiety disorders. Patients using cannabis for epilepsy management showed more variable outcomes, which researchers attributed to the complexity of epilepsy presentations and the specificity required in formulation selection.
Barriers and Concerns
While outcomes data was broadly positive, the survey also highlighted significant concerns. Cost of treatment remained the most commonly cited barrier, with 58 per cent of respondents indicating that treatment costs placed financial strain on their household. Stigma from GPs and other NHS clinicians was reported by 41 per cent of respondents as a source of difficulty in navigating their care.
A significant minority — 34 per cent — reported difficulty finding a pharmacist willing to dispense their prescription, underlining the need for continued expansion of the dispensing pharmacy network.
