NHS Specialist Cannabis Prescribing Network Expands to Scotland
NHS Scotland has confirmed the establishment of three new specialist centres authorised to prescribe cannabis-based medicinal products, bringing the total UK network to over 40 sites.
NHS Scotland has confirmed the launch of three additional specialist centres with authorisation to prescribe cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs), a significant expansion of the UK's medical cannabis infrastructure. The new sites are located in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen, each embedded within existing neurology and pain medicine departments.
Background
Prior to this announcement, NHS cannabis prescribing in Scotland was available through a single centre in Glasgow, limiting access for patients across a geographically dispersed population. The expansion follows a two-year pilot programme that demonstrated both clinical effectiveness and manageable operational costs.
Conditions Covered
- Treatment-resistant epilepsy in adults and children
- Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
- Spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis
- Intractable chronic pain where other treatments have failed
Waiting Times
NHS Scotland has committed to an initial specialist consultation within eight weeks of GP referral. Private clinic operators in Scotland have noted that their average time from referral to first prescription currently stands at under three weeks, though at considerably higher personal cost to patients.
Campaigners have called on NHS Wales and NHS Northern Ireland to follow Scotland's example. Both bodies have stated they are monitoring the Scottish programme closely before committing to similar expansion plans.
