Medical Cannabis for Veterans: New UK Programme Announced
A new programme offering dedicated medical cannabis assessments and prescribing support for UK veterans with PTSD and chronic pain has been launched in partnership with specialist clinics.
A newly launched programme is offering dedicated medical cannabis assessments for UK military veterans experiencing PTSD, chronic pain, and other service-related health conditions. The initiative, developed in partnership with specialist medical cannabis clinics and veterans' welfare organisations, aims to address a significant gap in the support available to former service personnel.
The Scale of the Problem
An estimated 6 per cent of UK veterans experience PTSD at some point following service, with rates significantly higher among those who served in high-intensity combat roles. Chronic musculoskeletal pain, traumatic brain injury sequelae, and sleep disorders are also disproportionately prevalent in the veteran population.
Many veterans have found that conventional NHS treatment pathways are inadequate for the complexity of their presentations, leading significant numbers to self-medicate with unregulated cannabis products — a situation that carries both legal and health risks.
What the Programme Offers
- Dedicated assessment appointments with clinicians experienced in veteran health needs
- Reduced-cost consultation rates for veterans presenting evidence of service
- Co-ordination with Veterans UK and NHS liaison services where applicable
- Ongoing monitoring with outcome data contributed to the UK medical cannabis registry
- Peer support networks connecting veteran patients with others on similar treatment journeys
Evidence Supporting Veterans' Use of Medical Cannabis
International evidence — particularly from the United States, Canada, and Israel — supports the therapeutic use of cannabis-based medicines for combat-related PTSD. Several controlled trials have demonstrated improvements in intrusive symptoms, hyperarousal, sleep quality, and overall quality of life among veteran participants.
The UK's own emerging observational data tells a similar story. For more information about medical cannabis and PTSD, visit the PTSD condition page. Veterans wishing to explore formal treatment routes can find participating clinics through our clinic directory.
How to Access the Programme
Eligible veterans can access the programme through participating clinics or by contacting the administering organisations directly. Veterans should prepare documentation of their service record and any existing NHS treatment history to facilitate assessment.
