New NICE Guidance Expected for Medical Cannabis and Mental Health

NICE is preparing updated guidance on the use of medical cannabis in mental health treatment, covering anxiety, PTSD and depression, a development that could significantly expand prescribing eligibility.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is in the process of developing updated guidance on the use of medical cannabis for mental health indications, including generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and treatment-resistant depression. The forthcoming guidance is expected to be among the most significant regulatory developments for the UK medical cannabis sector in recent years.

Conditions Under Review

The NICE review is examining the clinical evidence for cannabis-based medicines across several mental health conditions where existing treatment options often leave patients inadequately served.

  • Generalised anxiety disorder, supported by an increasing volume of clinical trial data
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder, where observational evidence from other jurisdictions is substantial
  • Treatment-resistant depression, assessed alongside other cannabinoid combinations
  • Sleep disorders associated with mental health conditions

Current Prescribing Landscape

At present, medical cannabis for mental health conditions is prescribed in the UK on a case-by-case basis, typically by specialist psychiatrists or GPs with particular expertise. There is no formal NICE-endorsed pathway for these indications, which means prescribing remains variable and often expensive for patients who must fund treatment privately. Formal guidance from NICE would represent a major shift, providing prescribers with clear criteria and potentially opening the door to NHS funding for eligible patients.

Patients with mental health conditions who believe they may benefit from medical cannabis can still access treatment through licensed private clinics. Our anxiety and PTSD condition guides explain the current evidence and access routes. You can find a specialist through our clinic directory, and our prescription guide explains the steps involved. LeafMe will publish a full update when the guidance document is released.
