Long COVID Patients Finding Relief with CBD Products, Study Finds

A UK-based observational study conducted by a collaborative of university researchers and GP surgeries has examined patient-reported outcomes among Long COVID patients using commercially available CBD products. The study, involving 640 participants recruited through NHS Long COVID clinics and patient support groups, found that a significant minority reported clinically meaningful improvements in three of the most debilitating Long COVID symptoms: fatigue, sleep disturbance, and cognitive dysfunction.

Study Design

Participants self-selected whether to use CBD products and were not randomised or directed towards specific formulations. The study collected data through standardised questionnaires at baseline and at four and 12 months. Researchers emphasised that the observational design prevents causal conclusions but generates hypotheses for future controlled trials.

Key Observations

• 28% of CBD users reported a clinically meaningful improvement in fatigue scores at 12 months
• 34% reported improved sleep quality on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index
• 22% reported subjective improvement in cognitive symptoms commonly described as brain fog
• No serious adverse events attributable to CBD use were reported in the study period

Scientific Caution

The study authors were careful to note that CBD products used by participants ranged widely in quality and concentration, and that without standardised dosing it is impossible to attribute outcomes to specific product characteristics. They called for a randomised controlled trial using pharmaceutical-grade CBD in Long COVID patients.

"We cannot say that CBD treats Long COVID. What we can say is that a substantial minority of patients using CBD reported improvements in symptoms that are otherwise very difficult to manage. That is a signal worth investigating rigorously."
