High street pharmacy chain Boots has confirmed it is piloting cannabis-based medicinal product dispensing in 50 selected stores, in a partnership with licensed specialist clinics.
Boots, the UK largest high street pharmacy chain, has confirmed the launch of a pilot programme to dispense cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) at 50 selected stores across England and Wales. The pilot, conducted in partnership with a consortium of licensed specialist cannabis clinics, marks the most significant step yet by a major retail pharmacy operator into the UK medical cannabis market.
How the Pilot Works
Patients with valid CBMP prescriptions issued by a licensed specialist clinic will be able to present their prescription at a designated Boots pharmacy counter. Participating stores have received dedicated secure storage installation and staff have completed product-specific dispensing training.
Pilot Locations
The 50 pilot stores have been selected to represent a mix of urban and suburban locations across multiple NHS Integrated Care Board areas. Boots has confirmed that the pilot includes stores in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, and Bristol, with the aim of capturing data on patient demographics and dispensing volume across diverse catchment areas.
