How to Store Medical Cannabis in the UK
Proper storage of your prescribed medical cannabis is essential for three reasons: preserving potency and efficacy, ensuring product safety, and meeting your legal obligations as a prescription medicine holder. This guide covers storage best practice for all common UK medical cannabis product types.
Legal Requirements for Storage in the UK
Medical cannabis in the UK is a Schedule 2 controlled drug. As a patient, you are legally required to keep your prescribed medication secure and prevent access by unauthorised persons — including children, visitors, or others in your household without a valid prescription.
While home patients are not legally required to use a locked cabinet (unlike pharmacies), it is strongly recommended. If your medication is lost, stolen, or accessed by others, report this to your prescribing clinic immediately. Your prescription cannot simply be replaced without a clinical review.
Storing Dried Cannabis Flower
Dried flower is the most sensitive form of medical cannabis to improper storage. The key enemies are:
- Light (especially UV): Degrades cannabinoids and terpenes rapidly. Store in opaque or UV-blocking containers.
- Heat: Accelerates cannabinoid degradation and promotes mould growth. Ideal storage temperature is 15–21°C.
- Humidity: Too dry (below 55% RH) causes trichome damage and brittle product. Too humid (above 65% RH) promotes mould and mildew. Target 58–62% relative humidity using a purpose-made humidity pack (Boveda 62 packs are widely available).
- Air exposure: Oxygen degrades cannabinoids. Use airtight containers — glass with a rubber seal is ideal.
Recommended Flower Storage Setup
- Airtight glass jar (mason jar or purpose-built cannabis storage jar) stored in original pharmacy packaging.
- Humidity pack inside the jar.
- Stored in a cool, dark drawer or cupboard — away from windows, ovens, radiators, and bathrooms.
- Do NOT store in the freezer — freezing damages trichomes and reduces efficacy.
- Do NOT store in the refrigerator unless advised — temperature fluctuations cause condensation.
Storing Cannabis Oils
Cannabis oils are more stable than dried flower but still require proper storage to prevent degradation:
- Keep upright to prevent leakage around the dropper seal.
- Store away from light — dark glass bottles slow degradation, but additional light protection (e.g. inside a box or drawer) is beneficial.
- Room temperature is generally correct (15–25°C). Do not refrigerate unless the product label specifically instructs this.
- Replace the cap firmly after each use. Oxygen exposure causes oxidation of cannabinoids.
- Most UK-dispensed oils have a shelf life of 12–24 months when stored correctly. Check the expiry date on your pharmacy label.
Storing Capsules and Oral Preparations
Capsules are the most straightforward to store:
- Keep in original blister pack or container until use.
- Store below 25°C in a dry location away from direct light.
- Do not transfer to generic pill containers — original pharmacy packaging contains batch and prescribing information required by law.
Storing Topical Preparations
Cannabis topicals (creams, balms) should be stored according to the product label — typically room temperature, away from direct light and heat sources. Most have a shelf life of 12–36 months. Discard if the texture, colour, or smell changes significantly.
Child Safety and Household Security
Medical cannabis must be kept out of reach of children at all times. Recommended measures include:
- Locked medicine cabinet or lockbox.
- High shelving inaccessible to young children.
- Never leave product on countertops, beside tables, or in bags accessible to children.
If accidental ingestion by a child or pet is suspected, contact the NHS Poisons Information Service (0344 892 0111) or go to A&E immediately.
Travelling with Stored Medication
Keep medication in original pharmacy packaging when travelling, particularly for air travel or crossing borders. Medical cannabis cannot legally be taken abroad in most circumstances — read our travel guide for medical cannabis patients for full guidance.
Disposing of Unused or Expired Medication
Do not dispose of medical cannabis in household waste or down the drain. Return unused or expired medication to your dispensing pharmacy. This applies to all prescription medicines and is a legal and environmental requirement.
Summary
- Store flower in an airtight, opaque glass container at 15–21°C with 58–62% relative humidity.
- Store oils upright, away from light, at room temperature.
- Keep all cannabis medications locked away and out of reach of children.
- Use original pharmacy packaging for legal compliance and product identification.
- Return unused medication to your pharmacy for disposal.
