UK Medical Cannabis Market Projected to Reach 690M GBP by 2028
A new market report forecasts the UK medical cannabis sector will grow to 690 million GBP by 2028, driven by increasing patient numbers and new clinic openings.
A report published by Cannabis Health News and market research firm Prohibition Partners forecasts that the UK medical cannabis market will reach 690 million GBP by 2028, up from an estimated 210 million GBP in 2024. The growth is attributed to increasing patient awareness, expanded clinic capacity, and gradual price reductions.
The report identifies approximately 80,000 active patients currently receiving medical cannabis prescriptions in the UK - a figure that has more than tripled since 2022. Patient growth is concentrated in the 25-55 age group, with anxiety and chronic pain remaining the most common indications.
Key growth drivers identified include: expanding clinic networks (with new locations opening in secondary cities), improved doctor training through the Academy of Medical Cannabis, growing consumer awareness via social media, and the ongoing NHS waiting crisis pushing patients toward private care.
The authors note that a potential NHS reimbursement scheme - currently under political discussion - could significantly accelerate growth by making cannabis therapies accessible to patients who cannot currently afford private prescriptions.
The UK market remains one of the largest in Europe for medical cannabis, with Germany the only EU country with a larger patient population.
