Medical Cannabis Patient Numbers Reach 50,000 in UK
The number of patients legally prescribed medical cannabis in the UK has crossed the 50,000 milestone, according to data released by the Medical Cannabis Registry. The figure represents a threefold increase in three years, driven by growing clinical acceptance, an expanding network of specialist clinics, falling product prices, and increased patient awareness. Chronic pain remains the most common indication, accounting for 62% of all prescriptions, followed by PTSD at 14% and neurological conditions at 9%.
The UK medical cannabis market has reached a significant milestone, with 50,000 patients now legally prescribed cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs), according to the latest data from the Medical Cannabis Registry published this month.
The 50,000 figure represents a threefold increase from approximately 17,000 patients in 2022, reflecting the rapid growth of the sector driven by an expanding network of specialist clinics, falling product prices, and growing awareness among both patients and prescribing doctors.
Breakdown of active prescriptions by indication:
- Chronic pain: 62% (31,000 patients)
- PTSD: 14% (7,000 patients)
- Neurological conditions (epilepsy, MS): 9% (4,500 patients)
- Anxiety and mental health: 8% (4,000 patients)
- Oncology (cancer-related): 4% (2,000 patients)
- Other: 3% (1,500 patients)
Despite the growth, the UK remains one of the most restrictive medical cannabis markets among developed nations. Germany, by comparison, has approximately 400,000 patients despite a smaller population. Advocates point to the UK's lack of NHS reimbursement, high consultation fees at some clinics, and limited patient and GP awareness as key barriers to further growth.
David Seymour, Chair of the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society, commented: "Reaching 50,000 patients is a milestone, but it represents a fraction of those who could benefit. With the right regulatory support and NHS integration, the UK has the potential to serve 500,000 patients within five years."
