Quick Navigation
What Is Medical Cannabis?
Medical cannabis refers to cannabis-based medicines prescribed by a licensed specialist doctor to treat a diagnosed medical condition. In the UK, it has been legal to prescribe since November 2018. It is not the same as recreational cannabis - medical cannabis is pharmaceutical-grade, standardised and prescribed in specific doses for specific conditions.
Is Medical Cannabis Legal in the UK?
Yes. Since 2018, specialist doctors have been able to prescribe cannabis-based medicines. Possession of a medical cannabis prescription protects you legally - you must carry your prescription documentation at all times. Recreational use remains illegal.
Who Can Get Medical Cannabis in the UK?
Any adult with a diagnosed medical condition that has not responded adequately to conventional treatment can potentially be prescribed medical cannabis. Most commonly prescribed conditions include:
- Chronic pain (neuropathic, musculoskeletal, cancer-related)
- Multiple sclerosis (spasticity, pain, sleep)
- PTSD and trauma-related conditions
- Anxiety disorders
- Epilepsy (especially treatment-resistant)
- Sleep disorders
- Fibromyalgia
How Do I Get a Prescription?
Through a private specialist cannabis clinic. The process:
- Book an initial consultation (video or in-person)
- Attend appointment with your medical records
- If suitable, receive a prescription
- Medicine delivered to your home
You cannot currently get medical cannabis through your NHS GP for most conditions.
How Much Does It Cost?
Initial consultations range from free (Mamedica) to £199 (premium clinics). Monthly medicine costs range from £60 (CBD-only protocols) to £350 (complex multi-product protocols). The UK average is approximately £180-220 per month total including follow-up appointments.
Will It Make Me High?
It depends on the product prescribed. CBD-only products produce no psychoactive effect. Products containing THC can produce intoxication, especially at higher doses. Most medical protocols are carefully titrated to minimise unwanted psychoactive effects while maximising therapeutic benefit.
Can I Drive?
UK law prohibits driving with THC above 2 micrograms per litre of blood. If you are prescribed THC-containing products, discuss driving with your prescriber. CBD-only products do not impair driving. Most patients prescribed THC products are advised not to drive for 4-6 hours after use.
